Good morning, Potomacker!
The people have spoken—and “Potomacker” is your official title. Wear it proudly (preferably with something under $100, because yes, it’s Tax-Free Week).
Meanwhile, live music echoes from Anglers Inn, sunflowers are blooming out at Butler’s, and someone’s bringing gelato to Glenstone (yes, really).
Also in the mix: bourbon you can’t find anywhere else, boats braving whitewater, Mahjong making a big comeback, and at least one local teen might just be too good at golf.
It’s a good week to be a Potomacker. Let’s loop.
🗞️ THE LOCAL LOWDOWN

Maryland's Tax Holiday Decoded

While some neighbors debate whether that $95 blazer from J.Crew qualifies for private school dress codes, Maryland's Tax Free Week starting this Sunday (8/10) and running through next Saturday (8/16) offers our annual chance for all of us to sidestep the state's 6% sales tax on qualifying clothing and footwear.
The fine print matters here. Each item must be priced at $100 or less to qualify so that $110 suit doesn't get a partial break, but two $80 sweaters purchased together both qualify. The first $40 of any backpack purchase is also tax-exempt, which should cover most of those monogrammed L.L.Bean classics dotting our driveways.
Online shopping counts too, provided you complete the purchase during the week and the retailer processes immediately. Amazon participates, though only for items sold by vendors collecting Maryland sales tax.
Those alterations for perfectly hemmed uniform pants? Still taxable. Accessories like jewelry, watches, and ties remain fully taxed—apparently the state draws the line at helping fund our tie collections.
Pro tip for the strategically minded: Retailer coupons that bring items under $100 qualify for the exemption, but manufacturer coupons don't affect the tax calculation.
Maryland also hosts a similar Energy Tax-Free Weekend each February for Energy Star appliances so mark your calendars for February 15-17, 2026, when that renovation gets a 6% discount.
📖 Explore the complete FAQ guide for detailed rules, online shopping guidelines, and what to do if you're incorrectly charged tax before you throw your tea into the harbor.
