Good morning, sharpened pencils!

From first-day jitters to jazz riffs on the Wharf, Potomac is already buzzing. Add in sidewalk sales, suffrage toasts, and pups slurping Tito’s Pup Cups, and you’ve got a week that zips from school hallways to sax solos.

Potomac’s never boring. Let’s loop.

🗞️ THE LOCAL LOWDOWN

MCPS Back-to-School Intel

Montgomery County Public Schools are back in session — almost. The first official day is tomorrow (8/26), but Transition Day is today which is a new full-day warmup for students in Kindergarten, 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades to meet teachers, tour buildings, and test the waters before the real thing begins.

MCPS are rolling out several changes that affect nearly all students and families:

Communication platforms are shifting. MCPS is phasing out Remind in favor of ParentSquare by January 2026. Double-check which platform your school’s using for now. ParentVUE still holds your child’s grades and schedule.

New “Refrigerator Curriculum” to post at home that give parents a quarterly cheat sheet on what kids are learning, plus opt-out forms for religious concerns.

All high schools now have vape detectors in bathrooms. No audio, no video, just alerts on vape emissions.

Even if you don’t have kids, remember: you must stop 20 feet from a school bus with its stop arm extended. Break this rule and you're looking at $250 to $570 in fines, plus three license points and disapproving head shakes from all your neighbors.
