Good morning, naturalists!
While you're deciding whether today calls for the hiking boots or the concert-ready loafers (let's be honest—with rain & thunderstorms forecast for the next few days, you'll definitely want some indoor alternatives), we've got your weekend sorted: from a remarkable bald eagle story to curated events that prove summer in Potomac is unmatched, plus thanks to everyone filling out our reader survey—keep those responses coming.
Fair warning: we got a little carried away with the good stuff this week, so grab that cold brew and settle in…
THE LOCAL LOWDOWN
From Endangered to Everywhere: Eagles' Remarkable Return
© Matthew Schwartz
A MD Department of Natural Resources article recently highlighted how Maryland's bald eagle population has achieved what even the most ambitious lacrosse parent would call a stunning comeback, soaring from a mere 44 breeding pairs in 1977 to over 1,400 pairs today—making our Chesapeake Bay region home to the highest concentration of these majestic birds outside of Alaska.
The recovery largely stems from the 1972 DDT ban and habitat protections like the Chesapeake Bay Protection Act of 1984, proving that when residents put our minds (and environmental regulations) to something, spectacular results follow.
Now our local waters serve as a year-round resort destination for three distinct eagle populations: local birds that stay put, southern eagles summering here for the exceptional dining, and northern populations wintering in our relatively balmy Chesapeake—essentially making our backyard the Hamptons of the avian world.
