Good morning, puddle jumpers!
Yesterday's impromptu water park turned some of our streets into rivers, but at least Montgomery County's 35 high-tech flood sensors are earning their keep. Meanwhile, Strathmore's dropping a stellar 2025 lineup with Herbie Hancock and John Cleese, plus weekend adventures from LEGO parrots to Bergman films for the culturally ambitious.
Last editions’ peak into NSWC Carderock may have earned us some new subscribers from Langley (welcome!) - but we could use all the help to settle Monday’s “A person from Potomac is called what?” poll with a final tiebreaker vote today.
So pour your waterproof coffee and let’s dive in…
🗞️ THE LOCAL LOWDOWN

Smart Sensors for Not-So-Smart Weather

NOAA
After yesterday's latest aquatic adventure turned our roads into impromptu rivers, it's worth noting that Montgomery County's high-tech flood sensors are working overtime to give us early warnings about rising waters. The county has deployed 35 solar-powered sensors at flood-prone locations, including 14 high-hazard dams and 21 low-lying roads, all provided free by the Department of Homeland Security.
These digital lifeguards detect rising water levels every five minutes and send alerts when predetermined thresholds are reached, helping officials prepare resources and warn residents before another "turn around, don't drown" situation develops. County Executive Marc Elrich noted that in just the last 60 days, they've seen the most flood watches issued over a two-month span in the program's 20-year history.
For Potomac residents curious about our neighborhood's flood monitoring, check out the map of where our monitoring stations are located on the county's flood sensor website here. The county also offers an interactive map of frequently flooded roads to help you plan which routes to avoid here. If you think your area needs a sensor or other flood-related improvements, contact 311 here to make a formal request as the county has been responding based on community safety needs.
