🗞 THE LOCAL LOWDOWN
Churchill High Students Make Waves Beyond the Pool

A borrowed tech suit that helped Churchill High's Maximus Devinney drop three seconds from his personal best sparked more than just faster times. It launched a realization about barriers in competitive swimming.
Along with brother Jay Cole, he founded Waves4Change, which has collected over $108,000 worth of swim gear, from barely-used racing suits gathering dust in closets to basic kickboards for kids experiencing their first swim lesson.
What began as one act of teammate kindness has grown into a DMV-wide movement. Now with donation bins at local clubs like Country Glen and Potomac Swim & Tennis, plus gear distribution reaching Baltimore, these teens prove the most meaningful victories happen outside the lane lines. Read more and donate your swim gear.
